Since 2000, the plant has undergone several expansions and stepped up its efforts to secure international manufacturing mandates from our parent company. Today, close to 50% of the medications produced at the Laval facility are destined for other countries, mainly the U.S. and Australia.
Award-winning facility
We have earned several awards for manufacturing excellence from our global parent company, and have been recognized by the Quebec government for our recycling and waste-reduction efforts. Our certification from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) enables us to manufacture medicines for use in the U.S. as well as in Canada.
In 2008, we completed a major expansion of our production and packaging facilities. This followed an upgrade and expansion of our warehouse, distribution centre and dispensing room (where raw materials are assembled prior to production), completed in 2006. Annual output stands at 13 million packaged units of tablets, capsules, liquids, ointments, gels and creams. Our facility handles all Canadian production of Altace® and also produces BenzaClin™, Benzamycin®, Klaron® and Noritate® on behalf of Dermik, the sanofi-aventis dermatology division.
Stimulating work environment
The plant offers a work environment where employees at all levels are encouraged to develop new skills and be self-directing. It benefits from access to a large pool of skilled workers in the Montreal area but sets the bar high when hiring, seeking out team players willing to become engaged their work.
Creativity is also prized. Through a program called ID-Action, employees are rewarded for good ideas that make our operations more efficient. Since 2000, close to 800 employee ideas have been implemented, for savings of over $1.5 million.
What sets pharmaceutical manufacturing apart from other types of production is its highly regulated environment. Employees must record every aspect of the production process—even the cleaning of production suites and equipment—using computer terminals installed throughout the plant.
